"GO GIRL GO!" PODCAST - EPISODE 10 MOTSI MABUSE
What a power woman: Let's Dance star Motsi Mabuse inspires millions of viewers with her infectious joy of life. What many people don't know: There are other times behind the bundle of energy - she grew up in South Africa during the apartheid era. In the podcast “GO GIRL GO!” She tells us what that did to her and how she started a new life in Germany.
When you think of Motsi Mabuse, you immediately think of images – and voices. The Let's Dance juror has an infectious laugh and when she speaks there is a lot of expressiveness, power and enthusiasm. In short: pure joy of life! And Motsi sounds like this: “Booombe” and “Baba BAM” are just two of her legendary exclamations.
It's hard to imagine that this woman was ever at home somewhere other than the colorful hustle and bustle of shows, right?
But in the podcast “GO GIRL GO!” Motsi talks openly and vulnerably about a completely different time, long before his show career. The dancer grew up in South Africa during the apartheid era, which only ended in 1994 when Nelson Mandela was elected as the country's first black president. "It was an atmosphere in which we were worthless. They laughed at us at tournaments," says Motsi. "A lot of doors were closed because of the color of your skin. It was a classic racial divide and the darker you were, the uglier you were. It was a lifelong struggle to say: I exist."
But Motsi didn't let herself get down - and above all: she didn't become bitter. With perseverance, discipline and the courage to believe in herself, she became South African runner-up in Latin dance in 1998. All the work had paid off. But that day, on which she had reached the first peak of her dancing career, developed into a major crisis on another level. Because her dance partner at the time had something to say to her...
Find out what it was in this incredibly emotional, powerful and inspiring episode!
