“THE LIONS’ CAVE” HAS A MUCH EFFECT IN GERMANY!

FROM EDITOR

Whoop whoop, the lion's den is turning 10! For the anniversary season, Judith looks back on the beginnings and chats a little about it. What is the secret of the format that breaks one ratings record after another? What changed the show in Germany? And what does it actually look like behind the camera?

THE LION'S DEN" HIT LIKE A BOMB IN 2014. WHY DID THE FORMAT HIT SUCH A NERVE?

I think it hit a nerve that had been ignored by politics and society for so long: namely the fact that people have dreams and want to get something done! Because it is precisely these entrepreneurial dreams that are often still neglected in Germany - in my opinion, they are also given far too little attention at school. And when a show comes on where five successful entrepreneurs sit down, talk about their experiences and help others build their own companies, that fills a big gap. I also believe that it's not just the self-employed who need this entrepreneurial mindset. The world of work and our society are changing rapidly and jobs these days place much higher demands on employees. That's why the show is so loved by everyone - whether founders or employees.

DO YOU NOTICE THAT THE SHOW HAS CHANGED SOMETHING IN GERMANY? IS THERE A DIFFERENT ATTITUDE TOWARDS ENTREPRENEURSHIP TODAY? OR GENERALLY MORE COURAGE TO DARE SOMETHING?

I hope so! At the beginning I noticed from comments on social media that not everyone was enthusiastic. For a long time there was a mentality in Germany that you just didn't tell anyone if you were successful because otherwise you would have seemed unpleasant. I'm glad those days are over. Not to show off, but to be an inspiration. In America we deal with this whole issue completely differently. Sometimes it might be a bit over the top, but it's definitely liberating. When someone has achieved something, we are not jealous, but rather acknowledge it. And most importantly, we encourage people: you can do exactly the same! And that's fantastic!

AS A WOMAN, YOU ALSO GOT CRITICAL COMMENTS AT THE BEGINNING. HAS THIS CHANGED OVER TIME?

Absolutely! Today, people are looking for women who have the courage to say: I'm going to take this entrepreneurial path and dare to take this adventure. By the way: I always hear that it's lonely at the top. I don't see it that way at all. The top is only lonely if you don't take anyone with you. That's why business is always about creating something not against each other, but with each other. And of course that women support women! I think that's nice.

THINGS CAN BE VERY BITCH BETWEEN YOU LIONS. IS IT ALL JUST A SHOW?

Not at all! You have to think of business like an Olympic competition. everyone wants to win. This can sometimes mean that you don't speak to each other for a week, even though you're filming together. (laughs) But you grow through it and get over it!

WHAT DEAL ARE YOU MOST ANGRY ABOUT THAT YOU DIDN'T GET?

I won't reveal that, but it was a deal where I didn't even throw my hat in the ring. In hindsight, that would have been a great catch. We could have really revolutionized a market with this

WHICH START-UPS ARE YOU MISSING IN THE LÖWENGEHE? WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SEE MORE OF?

Everything that has to do with sustainability is a huge market and extremely interesting for us. We see that over the years more and more companies are coming to us that are committed to the topic. I would also like to see really innovative packaging material, perhaps exciting systems for recycling.

MANY QUESTIONS: DO YOU ACTUALLY CHOOSE THE OUTFIT THAT YOU WEAR ON THE SHOW YOURSELF?

No, I have a strict stylist behind the scenes! I give my input and she says what she imagined. In the end - after a lot of shouting, arm waving and a wardrobe turned upside down - I somehow come out of it and come up with a compromise, which is always stunning. (laughs)

IF YOU COULD DESIGN THE SHOW ALONE: WHAT WOULD YOU DO DIFFERENTLY?

I would discuss the business models and deals more openly. I would go deeper and shed light on the different facets of the business. I think the viewer could learn an incredible amount from it.

NOW THE NEW SEASON IS STARTING. CAN YOU GIVE US A TASTE? WHAT CAN WE LOOK FORWARD TO?

It will be extremely exciting! We see lions who really want to win. No matter how and no matter what psychological tricks and tricks. There are incredibly touching and emotional stories that we hear and that amaze people. They not only share their ideas with us, but above all their lives. It's going to be great!
