When the deal with “Shavent” from “The Lion’s Den” was broadcast on TV, the start-up was completely overwhelmed. Since then, the young family business has been growing and growing - and the sustainable razor is conquering German bathrooms in record time. What's behind the shaving revolution? We spoke to the founder Romy.
When it comes to sustainable products and their effect on the environment, people always talk about how many tons of plastic or CO2 they can save. But most of the time you can't really do much with these numbers because they are difficult to classify. As the start-up Shavent In “The Lion's Den” it became concrete: the founders Romy Lindenberg and her father Armin Lutz Seidel had built 13 Statues of Liberty and explained what their invention had to do with it. In Germany alone, up to 500 million replacement shaving heads end up in the trash every year. That's the equivalent of 3,000 tons per year. And that's equivalent to the weight of the Statue of Liberty in New York - times 13! The lions couldn't help but be amazed that such a small, everyday product like a removable shaving head is responsible for such huge amounts of waste.
The ingenious invention of Armin Lutz Seidel proves that there is another way and that you could actually save these 13 Statues of Liberty: The mechanical engineer designed a razor with a movable oscillating head - made entirely of metal. The lions were immediately on fire. Ralf Dümmel on the one hand and Judith and Nico Rosberg as investor duo on the other definitely wanted to do the deal. ROMY, HOW DID YOU EXPERIENCE THE PERFORMANCE IN THE LION'S EXPOSURE?
First of all, it was incredibly inspiring and exciting that all the lions were so positive and immediately shared their enthusiasm for our razor. The fact that several people wanted to get involved and that it turned into a real negotiation thriller was absolutely crazy. We never expected that!
YOU HAD TO CHOOSE BETWEEN RALF DÜMMEL AND THE DUO JUDITH AND NICO ROSBERG. WHAT DID THE CHOICE OF JUDITH AND NICO? RALF DÜMMEL HAS PUT EVERYTHING INTO THE SCALE...
First of all, we found it appealing to have two lions on board. But the tipping point was something else. A friend of mine called me after the broadcast and said: “When Judith said that you also needed cosmetics, I saw that something happened in your eyes.” And I think that's exactly it. My father and I had long thought about offering shaving cream and products related to our razors, but cosmetics is an incredibly complicated business area with many pitfalls. We simply don't have any expertise there. We are familiar with engineering and construction. But we hadn't dared to try cosmetics yet - although it's of course very obvious to our product and many customers ask about it. When Judith said: “You need cosmetics and I can do it” something clicked for us.
LIKE OTHER FOUNDERS WHO RECEIVE MULTIPLE OFFERS, YOU RETURNED FOR ADVICE. HOW EXACTLY DOES SOMETHING LIKE THIS WORK?
We were always told: it takes the time it takes. We were able to discuss things in peace, but with three cameras around you and microphones, you tend to discuss things with your eyes. (laughs) But we both quickly agreed that we would take Judith and Nico Rosberg! In hindsight, things really couldn't have gone better. The result, the agreement and the incredible potential we see: We are still very excited about our step to go into “The Lion’s Den”.
ALL OF THE FOUNDERS ARE EXCITED TO WATCH THE DEAL. WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU SINCE?
Our servers didn't crash, but we were completely overwhelmed by the demand. It was crazy! People are already expecting that the TV broadcast will give the business a boost. A strong increase is expected; we were hoping for hundreds of orders. But when thousands of orders suddenly came in during and immediately after the broadcast, we were completely floored! Before, my father and I had 5 working students, now we have hired the 20th temporary worker this week. It's crazy!
YOUR FATHER ORIGINALLY DEVELOPED THE SHAVENT JUST FOR HIMSELF. DID YOU THINK THAT SUCH A BIG BUSINESS WILL COME OUT OF THIS?
When my father showed me and my mother his invention, we were amazed. I can still remember it clearly: Not only was it a super sustainable razor, but it was also much better than those plastic things and made my legs much smoother. We couldn't keep him to ourselves, he had to go out into the world! (laughs)

With normal razors, the trick we already know with printers and cartridges works: the razor seems cheap at first glance, but the blades make it expensive in the long run. LAST QUESTION: BEFORE you founded the company, you worked as a managing director at HELLOFRESH. HAVE YOU EVER REGRETED THE STEP INTO SELF-EMPLOYMENT?
Not at all! Anyway, I like working in small and rapidly growing companies. In the evening you see the result of what you started in the morning. Now building something together with dad is something very special! I heartily recommend it to anyone who is thinking about starting a business. You work on your own baby and no two days are the same. Definitely do it!
