ZERO WASTE IN THE BATHROOM – WHY SOLID COSMETICS IS THE MORE SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVE
FROM EDITOR
Have you ever thought about how much plastic you use in your bathroom every day? We produce a total of 39 kg of plastic waste per person in Germany every year*. If you want to reduce your plastic waste and are looking for more sustainable alternatives, the best place to start is in your home beauty temple. Solid and water-free cleaning and care products are one way to do something good not only for our skin, but also for our planet.
Beauty is becoming more and more sustainable: We all want to live in an environmentally conscious and resource-saving way, but we don't want to make any compromises. It is therefore not surprising that Waterless Beauty and solid care products (also Solid Beauty Bars called) is currently conquering our skincare routines as a plastic-free zero-waste alternative. Good this way! Are we looking towards a “water-free” beauty future?
SHAMPOO BARS, SOLID CLEANSER AND CO.: WHAT IS IT?
Solid Cosmetics and so-called “Bars” are cosmetic products in solid form from which the water content has been completely or almost completely removed. They look like a bar of soap and come in different shapes and colors. Basically, they are nothing other than their liquid counterpart - just in solid form. And they are becoming increasingly popular for good reason: whether in skin care and cleaning, hair and dental care and even in the field of decorative cosmetics. The interesting thing about this “trend”: It is not a new phenomenon in itself! We all know it from our childhood in grandma's bathroom: the old-fashioned bar of soap. A block of solid care – nothing more and nothing less. So back to the roots? Not quite!
WATER – A VALUABLE RESOURCE
On average, a bottle of shampoo contains 70 – 80% water. And we also often find “Aqua” in the Inci list for cleansers and creams. But the cold water is and remains a valuable resource. Supplies are becoming scarce worldwide. Today, one in three people already live without clean drinking water and by 2050 between 3.5 and 4.4 billion people will live with limited access to water.** In connection with water-based beauty products, the following factors also apply:
1. Where there is water, it must be conserved. Its use therefore requires the addition of preservatives in many recipes that kill bacteria microbial growth keep in check.
2. By adding water as a filler, the active ingredients of a product are deliberately diluted. The “less effective” a product is, the more we use of it. The more we consume, the more packaging is used. This not only leads to higher water pollution. This cycle also puts a strain on the environment in terms of transport and production, which in turn has a less positive impact on the CO2 balance.
ADVANTAGES AT A GLANCE
So far, so clear. But why is it worth switching to Solid Beauty Bars and what are the key advantages?
1. NO PLASTIC PACKAGING
Do you want it plastic-free? Thanks to its solid nature, the products can theoretically be sold completely unpackaged. For better protection, however, they often come to you in paper or a sustainable cardboard box. This saves a lot of plastic packaging and protects Mother Earth.
2. HIGH YIELD
Since solid cosmetics contain no or almost no water, you get very effective products that do not need to be “stretched” by a water content. This means that they are so rich that smaller amounts of application are sufficient, you waste less and can therefore look forward to a long period of use. Very specifically: a solid cleanser like this PHYTOMINERAL SUPERFOOD SILK CLEANSER is compared to a liquid facial cleanser five times more productive! This not only saves you an impressive five plastic bottles, but also saves you money in the end.
3. INTENSIVE CARE “ON ANOTHER LEVEL”
But ecological responsibility is not the only good reason to avoid using water as an ingredient. The solid alternatives also impress with their variety of active ingredients! There are no compromises in performance. On the contrary: “Aqua” is considered a cost-effective filler that in many cases gives the formulas volume – it often literally waters down the other active ingredients. If you reduce it, there is more room for really valuable ingredients and an intensive care effect.
“There are no compromises in performance because the composition is identical to products in liquid form – except for the water.”
Judith Williams
4. PERFECT TRAVEL COMPANIONS
Small, light and handy - solid care products are the ideal travel companions, fit in every bag and can even be carried in hand luggage on the plane. You can simply take them with you in a pretty little container. The same applies, of course, to your well-stocked sports bags and backpack for a short trip. By the way, there is a suitable bar soap for every skin care need. You'll be surprised how well this works!
GOOD FOR US – GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
But the waterless beauty movement doesn't just have to be limited to the products themselves. In the best case scenario, it is used as an opportunity to change your own beauty routine in total to be more mindful and to live more consciously about our daily water footprint and plastic consumption. No matter whether it's turning off the tap, shorter shower rituals, or the targeted selection of your care treasures: not only our skin is happy about this mindset, but also our environment and all its inhabitants.
