What does fragrance pyramid actually mean?

You've probably already noticed that the scent of a perfume changes over the course of the day. This is due to the so-called fragrance pyramid. This is how perfumers describe the different phases of fragrance development.

A distinction is made between the top note, the heart note and the base note. Each of these phases is made up of several fragrance components that work together to form a complex fragrance composition.

• Top note: The top note of the perfume represents the top of the fragrance pyramid and determines the first impression. This phase of the fragrance often only lasts a few minutes and is intended to arouse curiosity about the perfume. The top note can be detected immediately after spraying onto the skin, as soon as the alcohol has evaporated. Fresh, floral or fruity components often dominate here.
